In the 17th century when coffee was introduced to America, it was done manually by hand. It required a grinder to break down the beans, boiling water to specific temperature as well as pouring the water gently over the coffee to get a balanced cup. This was a tedious process that took roughly 7-8 minutes for a single cup of coffee. In 1908, Melitta Bentz invented the first drip coffee maker using by creating a filter out of blotted paper (Team W.N (nd)) This was the spark to the coffee revolution and changed how coffee is made today. After that, many inventors took this idea and improved upon it. The most notable being Achile Gaggia, who invented the espresso machine and found a way to pressurize hot water and deliver it through coffee grinds. After that, many people have used this method as a standard and have implemented their own features to it. The need for this revolution is making coffee can time consuming and a task. Also, making large amounts such as coffee shops will not be achievable without this invention. It revolutionized how coffee is made and allowed for certain steps and processes to be quicker or even not required. Without it places like a local coffee shop or Starbucks would not exist in the eco system.

The specific Coffee machine I will talk about is the Mielle Coffee machine. It has 13 features and some of which make it one of the top coffee machine makers in today’s market. Coffee/espresso at its purest is technical and requires small steps to achieve the best brew. According to the diagram below (image 1) , figure 1 is a cup warming surface. This allows keeping the cup warm and similar to the temperature of the coffee/espresso so the coffee flavor is not affected. For many this might seem like a useless feature, but for coffee enthusiast it is to be a standard. Figure 2 is the bean container. With this machine, you can choose beans of choice and are not restricted to the brand of the bean to the coffee. For example, kureg coffee machines require kureg coffee tablets/pods in order to work. This also breaks down and grinds the coffee to one’s choice. Depending on preference, one can have the coffee be blended to coarse or fine depending on how strong/flavorful their preference desires. Figure 3 is display and controls. More information will be found below in the “settings/usage section”. Figure 4 is the hot water spout which allows water to be heated and pass through to the grinded beans. This can be adjusted to temperature of choice as well and will be explained where to do so in the next section. Figure 6 is the waste container. This is where all the excess beans and unused parts of the beans go. This must be cleaned per 8-10 cups. The machine will not work until this cleaned. It has its own container in the bottom left when opening the machine. Open, dump and rinse and the machine should work properly after. Figure 7 is the drip tray. This is found at the very bottom of the machine. It is a thin rectangular tray and is filled with excess liquid. After being filled the censors detect its fillage by weight. Dump the excess water in a sink and rinse so it doesn’t get sticky and place back. Figure 9 is the milk apparatus. One can place milk in a separate container which is to the right of where the coffee is dispensed. It will combine and infuse the milk to the coffee so one doesn’t do this manually. You place the milk in the glass container and connect it the nozzle to the right of the coffee. The machine will detect this and ask you if you would like to use the milk from the container. It will show up before dispensing the coffee making it user friendly. Figure 12 is the water container. It is placed in the back of the machine and is a clear. The user will fill every 6 cups.

The machine can be turned on by the power button. First thing it will do is rinse and clean the pipes which takes roughly 10-15 seconds. (Mille coffee maker user guide). On the left side you have many options. The top right image of a small cup is for espresso. Next to it to the left is for coffee. The bottom right is for a cappuccino and to the left it is for a large cup of coffee usually for those who are on the go. The settings are simple and everything is touch screen. You touch and it will dispense. The bottom next to the power button is your settings. The first image with the two squares is the settings. In the settings there is the options to customize your coffee. You can choose the amount of the coffee you would like dispensed, how hot you would like it, how much milk to be dispensed and whether you want the milk to be foam or as an affogato. You will use the arrow keys to the side to go up and down to different settings and the side keys to increase or decrease a setting of choice. Once done, press ok to confirm the change. Pressing ok must be done for any change or it will not be saved. The machine doesn’t have sub settings an everything comes up on the center screen. It is user friendly and straightforward. There are arrow keys to the left that allow you to scroll and confirm the settings. The person icon is to give the status of the machine. It will tell you if it needs maintenance (more info next section), if it has to be cleaned, if there is a problem or error with the machine as well. The bean coffee icon is whether a person would like to use regular bean coffee or ground coffee. By clicking the icon, you are able to choose which one you would like. In the machine where you place regular beans, there is a slot to the left of it, One can place ground coffee up to 2 servings. For a better description look to image 3.It has a red sticker with a small flap. The machine usually detects and will notify you before dispensing coffee, but in case it doesn’t one can choose to do it manually. The machine is fairly simple and straightforward. Everything on it is touch screen and will keep you updated if you need to clean or change anything as well if there is an error. It will tell you if something isn’t placed correctly or inserted properly. If the machine isn’t functioning properly it will tell you what the problem is with a code number. Refer to the manual to see what system error it maybe and it has step by step processes on how to solve the issue. If the problem is out of your hands or issues understanding it , contact the company and they will send a tech to your house to assist you or you can call over the phone.
Last thing to know about the machine is maintenance. If the machine requires cleaning it will notify and will not function until done. One of the main and important cleaning for the machine is degreasing. The machine will notify you 20 cups in advance when this needs to be done. When the number hits 0 the machine will not function until tended to. (Mielle manual) This is fairly simple however time consuming. When purchasing the machine, it comes with a white big pill just like the one in image 3. It’s a package worth a year’s supply. Every 100 cups of coffee this maintenance must be done. It is meant to clean the internal tubes of the machine. Residue may build up over time and can clog the machine and tubes and this process will prevent it. You take one of these pills and place it in the water container. In the user settings at the very bottom is an option with maintenance. You press ok and it will ask if you would to degrease your unit. Hit okay and it will start the process for you. It will take about 12 min to complete. The pill will dissolve in the water and will pass through tubes just as if one was dispensing coffee. When completed clean and refill the water container. It will ask you to hit continue. After that, the water will rinse and pass through the tubes again to clean any chemical left from the pill. Repeat and clean and refill the water container and the machine is good to go. Once completed the coffee machine will notify you and you will be able to use it again.
